Coastal Conflict Seeks Maiden Win on Sunday at Belmont

by B. Jason Brooks

Phipps Stable’s homebred juvenile filly Coastal Conflict will look to take a step forward on Sunday, Nov. 8, in Belmont Park’s sixth race, a one-mile maiden special weight on the turf. She will break from post 5 in a field of 12, with Javier Castellano aboard for Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey. Post time is scheduled for 3:12 p.m. Eastern.

Coastal Conflict finished off the board in her turf debut on Oct. 4 at Belmont, going 1 ¹⁄₁₆ mile. She enters Sunday’s race off a sharp four-furlong breeze in 47.29 seconds over Belmont’s all-weather track on Nov. 1, the third-fastest of 29 at the distance.

The fourth-generation Phipps homebred is by Violence and out of the winning Blame mare Seaside Retreat. She is her dam’s second foal and a half-sister to Phipps-bred winner Poppy Woppy (Mitole). Bred on the same Violence–Blame cross as multiple grade 1 winner Forte, her second dam, Boca Grande (A.P. Indy), and third dam, Country Hideaway (Seeking the Gold), were both multiple graded stakes winners for the Phipps family and Mr. McGaughey.

Coastal Conflict hails from the Phipps female family of Our Country Place, whose descendants include grade 1 winners Pleasant Home (Seeking the Gold), Point of Entry (Dynaformer), Pine Island (Arch), and Guarana (Ghostzapper).
