Phipps Stable’s homebred two-year-old filly Coastal Conflict will switch to the turf and stretch out in distance for her second career start on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Belmont Park.
The daughter of Violence is entered in Race 6, a $100,000 maiden special weight for two-year-old fillies going 1 ¹⁄₁₆ mile on the turf. Coastal Conflict drew post 7 in the field of 12 and will have Antonio Fresu aboard for Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey. Post time is scheduled for 2:59 p.m.
Coastal Conflict got a race under her belt this summer at Saratoga on August 22, finishing off of the board in a 6½-furlong maiden special weight on the dirt.
Saturday’s race represents a significant change in conditions from Coastal Conflict’s debut, add two furlongs in distance while making her first start on turf. She most recently worked on Sunday, Sept. 20, breezing four furlongs on the Belmont all-weather track in 48.86 seconds (ranking tenth of 26).
Coastal Conflict is the second foal out of winning Blame mare Seaside Retreat and is a half-sister to Phipps-bred winner Poppy Woppy (Mitole). Her pedigree is rated A+ by TrueNicks, and she is bred on the same Violence/Blame cross as multiple grade 1 winner Forte.
Her second dam, Boca Grande (A.P. Indy), and third dam, Country Hideaway (Seeking the Gold), were both multiple graded stakes winners for Phipps Stable and McGaughey. Her fourth dam is Our Country Place (Pleasant Colony), the foundation mare purchased privately as a yearling by Ogden Phipps in 1993. The family has also includes grade 1 winners Guarana, Point of Entry, Pine Island, and Pleasant Home.
