Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable’s homebred colt Quiet Power will make his stakes debut on Monday, September 7th, in the Old Dominion Derby (G3), contested over a mile and an eighth on the turf at Colonial Downs.
Entered in Race 9 on Colonial’s Labor Day card, Quiet Power will break from post № 3 in a field of 14 with jockey Vincent Cheminaud aboard for Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey. Post time is scheduled for 4:18 p.m. Eastern.
The grey Tapit colt earned his first victory going one mile over the Aqueduct turf on June 11th. Breaking from the rail under jockey Jose Lezcano, he tracked the pace from the inside before swinging four wide into the stretch and producing a strong closing rally. He took command late and drew clear to win by a length and a quarter in 1:34.88. (Replay below.)
The victory came in his sixth career start following four placings, including consecutive runner-up efforts on the Aqueduct turf as a juvenile and third-place finishes at Gulfstream Park and Aqueduct this spring.
Following his maiden win, Quiet Power returned to action at Saratoga on July 25th, finishing fifth in a mile-and-a-sixteenth allowance optional claimer.
Monday’s race will stretch him out to a mile and an eighth for the second time while providing his first opportunity in stakes company.
The Old Dominion Derby field is headed by 5-2 morning-line favorite Supercharger (Constitution), winner of the Secretariat Stakes (G2) at Colonial on August 1st. The field’s other black-type performers include The Big Con (GB) (Dark Angel {IRE}), winner of the 2025 Grey Stakes (CAN-G3); Heeere’s Johnny (Oscar Performance), winner of the 2026 Saranac Stakes and runner-up in the 2025 Pilgrim Stakes (G2) and With Anticipation Stakes (G3); Tiernanogue (Quality Road), runner-up in the 2026 Audubon Stakes; Kravitz (Justify), runner-up in the 2026 Kent Stakes; and Chambersville (Twirling Candy), who placed in the 2026 Kent Stakes.
Quiet Power is a half-brother to Phipps homebred Dreams of Tomorrow (Speightstown), who placed in the 2021 Henry S. Clark Stakes. They are out of the three-time-winning Phipps-bred Medaglia d’Oro mare Sabbatical, a half-sister to Man o’ War Stakes (G1)-winning millionaire Imagining (Giant’s Causeway).
Quiet Power’s second dam is multiple grade 1-placed and three-time graded stakes winner Daydreaming (A.P. Indy). She won the Top Flight Handicap (G2) and Indiana Breeders’ Cup Oaks (G3) in 2004 and the Next Move Handicap (G3) in 2005.
His third dam is Get Lucky (Mr. Prospector), winner of the 1992 Affectionately Handicap (G3) and a full sister to champion and Travers Stakes (G1) winner Rhythm.
In addition to the aforementioned Imagining, Get Lucky’s grade 1-winning descendants include 2010 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver (Maria’s Mon); 2022 Frizette Stakes (G1) winner Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke); 2015 Spinster Stakes (G1) winner Got Lucky (A.P. Indy); 2015 Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) winner Callback (Street Sense); 2010 Vosburgh Stakes (G1) winner Girolamo (A.P. Indy); and 2006 Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat).
Monday’s Old Dominion Derby presents Quiet Power with his most demanding test to date and an opportunity to add graded stakes success to one of the most accomplished Phipps female families.
